The use/misuse of illegal and legal substances, whether deliberate or unintentional, in the workplace can harm the user both physically and mentally and, through the user’s actions, other people and the environment. Substance user’s can be a serious problem for the business where they work and, sometimes, for their co-workers.

The possession of some substances is illegal, exposing the user to the risk of criminal charges. The employer could be breaking the law if they knowingly allow substance-related activities in the workplace and fail to act. It is just as important to know the implications to both employees and business of not tackling substance use, particularly where safety is involved. Section 8 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 states:

If you knowingly permit the production or supply of any controlled drugs, the smoking of cannabis or certain other activities to take place on your premises you could be committing an offence.

Why provide Substance Use in the Workplace Training?

  • Reduction in the cost of absenteeism or impaired productivity;
  • Create a more productive environment by offering support to those employees who declare a substance-related problem and improve employee morale;
  • Reducing the risk of accidents caused by impaired judgement;
  • Enhancing the public perception of your organisation as a Corporate Social Responsible employer;
  • Contributing to society’s efforts to combat Substance misuse.

 Substance use has many other issues associated with it and a valued staff member finding themselves in difficulty may be unwilling to approach a manager for fear of reprisal.  Supporting staff through these issues can result in a successful outcome for both, with increased productivity and the company’s reputation enhanced as an employer that people wish to work for.

Many companies now test their employees, that is an individual decision for that company, however for example, many who are driving company vehicles or even to and from work do not realise that they may be over the drink drive limit the next day. LTP Corporate Training include alcohol as a substance during our Substance Use in the Workplace trainings as it is another legal substance which can be used and misused.
